Self Portrait.

I definitely want to also improve on my art. So, to challenge myself, I wanted to choose two separate movements / artists to combine to make my self portrait. I looked into the impressionism era because I thought Banksy's boldness on top of and impressionistic background would help contrast the boldness. Banksy's style can easyily combined with other art movements. The plain boldness is able to be layered onto many things. While looking at impressionism, I seen the classic Starry Night by Van Gogh. The way Starry Night looks makes me relate. While looking at that piece, I can see myself in it. I associate myself with the moon as well, so having that in the piece was definitely a must. Starry Night does have some very bold and dark color scheme.
Starry Night- Van Gogh
http://roman-shymko.com/digest/new-painting-of-mine-based-on-van-gogh-starry-night/ I decided to use my favorite color scheme. It is a cooler, less harsh combination. I also think it was a good combination to contrast with the harsh black I was going to layer on top of it.
After finishing the background, I decided to have my Banksy inspiration to be Girl with Blue Bird.
Girl with Blue Bird - Bansky
https://twitter.com/niumestreetart/status/550967248467542016 This picture is a little old and I got a second nose piercing. I ended up free handing it in. I uploaded this picture on photo shop and used the stamp photo filter. Then printed out a transparency to use a projector to trace myself on to my canvas. This is the second transparency I printed. I tried to use a newer picture of myself but, I really liked how this one turned out with the black and white scheme.

Love is in the Air - Banksy

I didn't really want that to be portrayed in my self portrait. So I just used a picture of myself were I look more positive.
I traced myself onto my canvas. After that, just lots of black. I filled in all the negative space that I traced on. It was a pretty simple process but I was very careful and caustions about making the black clean and bold. I almost prefered this style over any of the realistic portrait I have done.

Then to add on to Girl with Blue Bird I added the blue bird onto my shoulder. It gave a larger connection visually to Girl With Blue Bird.
Reflection:
This project was a success for me. I really like the aesthetic of this piece. The contrast in colors and artists was a great decision. It gives the piece dimension. An improvement to this piece could be doing more layering for the background. The background did have some white space and if I layered more I think it would look even better. If there was more layering to the background I think the black would have popped even more as well. The black was a good choice and turned out very well. I was worryed there was not going to be enough detail to have it representative of me. But it looks just like me. The obious use of artist inspiration was successful. Banksy's use of graffiti can be contrasts with so many artists and leave the creative combinations almost endless. The combination of these two movements made deeper meaning to my piece unintetionally. Almost like a "don't judge a book by it's cover." theme. I may not be open about who I am or what I stand for all the time. But it shows through and who I am shows through my cover. Underneath my cover there is pages and pages of stories and experiences. |
